What One‑Sided Jaw Pain Is Trying to Tell You

Jaw pain that strikes suddenly can be alarming, especially if it’s limited to just one side. In most cases, though, it isn’t dangerous and often resolves on its own or with simple home care. However, if your discomfort persists, worsens, or comes with other warning signs, it’s time to see an emergency dentist. Continue reading to learn about the possible causes of one-sided jaw pain and guidance on when to seek urgent care.

What Are the Common Causes of Jaw Pain on One Side?

There are many reasons why one-sided jaw pain may occur, such as:

  • TMJ Disorders – The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect your lower jaw to your skull and allow you to chew, speak, and yawn. If only one joint is inflamed or misaligned, you may feel pain on that side.
  • Sinusitis – Inflammation of the sinus cavities often triggers pressure and pain around the eyes, cheeks, and upper teeth. Because the roots of your back teeth sit close to the sinus floor, you may feel jaw discomfort on one side when sinuses are blocked or inflamed.
  • Dental Issues – An untreated cavity or abscessed tooth can cause radiating pain into the jaw. Likewise, grinding or clenching your teeth (bruxism) places extra stress on one side of your jaw, leading to soreness, stiffness, or even muscle spasms.
  • Trigeminal Neuralgia – Although rare, trigeminal neuralgia involves sudden, severe facial pain caused by irritation of the trigeminal nerve. Attacks can feel like electric shocks on one side of the jaw, lasting seconds to minutes.
  • Salivary Gland Obstruction – Minerals and mucus can form stones in the salivary ducts, blocking saliva flow and leading to painful swelling near the jawline. You may also notice redness, tenderness, and an unpleasant taste if infection sets in.

When to See an Emergency Dentist

If your jaw pain is mild and short-lived, you might start with over-the-counter pain relievers, warm or cold compresses, and gentle jaw stretches. However, schedule an emergency dentist appointment if you notice any of the following:

  • Trouble eating, swallowing, speaking, or breathing
  • Severe or worsening pain that limits jaw movement
  • Signs of infection, like swelling or fever
  • Sudden flow of salty or foul-tasting fluid in your mouth

Even if your dentist discovers the problem isn’t strictly dental (i.e., sinusitis or a nerve disorder) they can often refer you to the right specialist. With early intervention, we can relieve pain faster and prevent more serious complications down the road.
